Need to furnish your place? Personalize old furniture!
Here's a suggestion if you need to provide your own furniture, but you don't want to spend a fortune or sacrifice style. If your crafty or have some assistance from someone with experience, consider refurbishing old furniture. I got a used coffee table for free from my mom's coworker. It was worn, marked up, and an unattractive color. So, I decided to paint and personalize. I went to Home Depot and bought paint and a lacquer that wouldn't ruin photographs.
The Blue Lagoon
My roommate and I found that the plain white cinderblock walls at our school ended up feeling alot like a prison cell, so we ordered full wall murals online to bring in more color during the long winter months along with covering up the monotony of the walls... plus they get a lot of really cool reactions from people passing by in the halls.
Wall Decoration - Black and White Photos
super-cheap dorm room decorating idea
If you keep an eye out for colorful postcards, you can create an intriguing piece of wall art that will grow over the course of the semester and be a nifty reminder of all the cool stuff you've done. Best of all, lots of promotional postcards (which advertise a new band, movie, gallery exhibit, whatever) are free! You can find them in bookstores, record stores, and coffeeshops, or even on the street. Also, if you're feeling super-artsy, you can cut up local newspapers and/or magazines and make collages to beautify your space.
