Okay, so I was one of those freshmen who brought way too much to college, but there's something to be said for being over-prepared. My reputation for "having it all" got around the dorm quickly, and I met quite a few people thanks to my over-preparedness. After all, you'd be surprised how many people tried to open their first can of spaghetti-o's, only to find that -- uh oh -- they didn't have a can opener. College Bound: The Organized Dorm

I can still remember my shopping list for my first dorm room. Years ago we kept it simple -- the must have storage staple was the old dairy crate and that was pretty much it. Those dairy crates organized everything from sweaters and sweatshirts to books. Today the storage choices are almost unlimited (although the budget may not be...), so outfitting a dorm room or first apartment can be a bit overwhelming. I have asked our summer intern (a college student) to share some organizing challenges she has experienced first hand. Loft Beds And Dorm Decorating Tips

The small size of the living area is the major issue for the dorm room decorator. When working with such a compact space, including pieces of furniture that double up in purpose and function increases the room's usable space. This way, you can use all the space of the room, from the floor (for storage) to the ceiling (for sleeping.) For example, you can pair a desk and a bed by using a loft bed. You can increase the storage space with a bunk bed. All these combinations offer tons of creative solutions for a smart student decorator.
